Role of the Regulator

We are receiving reports that some course providers are making false claims of FEDANT Accreditation.
Please ring the FEDANT office if you have any concerns.

The Federation of Antenatal Educators (FEDANT) is the UK Regulator for Antenatal Educators and providers of Antenatal Education in the United Kingdom. Established in accordance with government white paper Trust and Assurance, Regulation in the 21 st  Century the Federation is a profession regulator for those operating in the field of Antenatal Education outside of the provision by statute.

The primary reason for the existence of FEDANT is to protect the public by providing a National Register of validated professionals within the field of Antenatal Education. This provision extends to Antenatal Educators, Breastfeeding Counsellors, Doulas and Complementary Practitioners.

Under current UK legislation there is no requirement for any Antenatal Educator to hold any qualifications or insurance.

In years gone by the antenatal classes which were available to parents were provided by NHS based Midwives and Health Visitors.

With expanding parental choice and the introduction of various independent qualifications in Antenatal Education and the development of private antenatal and midwifery services, the role of the Antenatal Educator has become recognised as a health profession in its own right.

There are a range of Antenatal Classes available in the UK .  Some types of courses cover a wide field of options, some to great depth whilst other types focus on specific areas such as hypnotherapy or holistic therapy approaches such as Yoga.  It is the role of the regulator to ensure that individuals admitted to the National Register are competent to practice and are appropriately insured.  We can provide general information on the types of classes. It is recommended that as part of an informed decision making process parents should review options when selecting a class/course.

FEDANT works closely with professional bodies, Charities, Nursing and Midwifery Council and Government Regulatory bodies to offer a Registration Service for Qualified Antenatal Educators. FEDANT is a non-profit body and services to parents are free of charge.
