Health bosses at Portsmouth Primary Care and Hospitals trusts have joined forces to fund a full-time senior midwife to work in the Charles Dickens area. From the end of April, the midwife will work with some of the poorest pregnant women in the area to improve their health and give their babies the best possible start in life. The midwife will give women living in the ward help to quit smoking. At 43 per cent, Charles Dickens has the highest smoking rate in the city, above the national average of 25 per cent.Mums-to-be will also be given advice and encouraged to breastfeed their newborns. Portsmouth Hospitals Trust head of midwifery Donna Ockenden said: ‘We will be concentrating on women in the Charles Dickens area who have special needs.’
