Start Your Journey Towards Professional Registration

Begin your professional training with confidence

Choosing the right qualification is an important first step towards safe, informed and professional practice. This guide explains the available training routes, the information to consider before enrolling and how a qualification may relate to a later application for professional registration.

Start With the Role You Want to Work In

Training in the antenatal and postnatal sector covers a range of distinct professional roles. Before comparing courses, decide which area of practice you want your qualification to support and check the corresponding FEDANT National Register category.

Antenatal Educators

Preparing parents and families for pregnancy, birth and early parenthood through structured education.

Breastfeeding Counsellors

Providing appropriately qualified breastfeeding information, skilled support and counselling.

Infant Feeding Practitioners

Supporting families with infant feeding within the practitioner’s qualifications, competence and professional boundaries.

Doulas

Providing non-clinical practical, emotional and informational support during pregnancy, birth or the postnatal period.

Postnatal Practitioners

Supporting parents and families after birth within an appropriately defined postnatal scope of practice.

Relative Sector Practice

Some courses support related areas such as pregnancy yoga, hypnobirthing, baby massage or other relevant practice. Check the exact register route before enrolling.

Understanding Your Training Route

Training and qualification routes vary between education providers. Before enrolling, consider the course content, assessment arrangements, practical or supervised learning and the professional role the qualification is intended to support.

When you later apply for admission to the FEDANT National Register, provide the full details of your qualification or award and the education provider as part of your application.

Why Choose a FEDANT Accredited Course?

A clearer route into professional practice

FEDANT course accreditation provides you with a simple route to Professional Registration with FEDANT and reassurance that the course has completed the applicable accreditation process. This may help prospective students when considering their training options and future professional development.

Robust Assessment

The course and supporting evidence submitted for accreditation undergo assessment before approval is granted.

Education and Safety Standards

The course is reviewed against the applicable educational requirements, agreed parameters and core professional elements.

Recognised Entry Route

Graduates may apply for the corresponding National Register category, subject to all other admission requirements.

Ongoing Quality Review

Each accredited course is regularly reviewed to confirm that it continues to operate within the required parameters.

Accreditation Information

Where a provider states that a course holds current FEDANT accreditation, it should be able to provide the relevant Education Provider/Course Number for reference.

Professional Progression

A recognised course route helps students plan for qualification, appropriate insurance and a later application to the FEDANT National Register.

Information to Consider Before You Enrol

Accreditation Information

If a course is described as FEDANT accredited, ask the education provider for its current accreditation information.

Published Information

Review the information published by FEDANT where course accreditation is relevant to your decision.

Register Category

Ask which FEDANT National Register category the qualification is intended to support. Approval in one category does not imply approval in another.

Your Programme

Ask whether any stated accreditation applies to the programme, intake and study dates you are considering.

Questions to Ask Before Paying

Qualification

What is the full qualification title and which professional role is it designed to prepare me for?

Course Accreditation

If the course is described as FEDANT accredited, what current accreditation information can the education provider give you?

Teaching Team

Who teaches and assesses the course, and what relevant qualifications and professional experience do they hold?

Course Content

What topics, guided learning, independent study, practical experience and supervised practice are included?

Assessment

How will my knowledge, practical skills, professional judgement and safe practice be assessed?

Professional Boundaries

Does the course clearly explain scope of practice, safeguarding, referral, confidentiality, consent and working with other services?

Costs and Commitments

What are the full fees, additional costs, study hours, attendance requirements, cancellation terms and expected completion date?

Progression

Which National Register category may I apply for after qualifying, and what additional registration or insurance requirements will apply?

Pause Before Enrolling If

  • Claims about accreditation, qualifications or professional progression cannot be clearly explained or supported.
  • One qualification is claimed to permit practice across several different professional roles despite involving very limited study hours.
  • Automatic personal registration is promised without a separate application to the FEDANT National Register.
  • Course content, assessment, supervised practice, fees or cancellation terms are unclear.
  • You feel pressured to pay before understanding the course and what the qualification may lead to.

From Choosing a Course to Professional Registration

Choose

Identify the professional role and National Register category you want to work towards.

Record

Keep the full course title, education provider details and information about the qualification or award.

Qualify

Complete the learning, assessment and practical requirements of your chosen qualification.

Apply

After qualifying, apply separately for admission to the FEDANT National Register and provide the required evidence.

Course Accreditation and Personal Registration Are Different

Completing a FEDANT accredited course does not itself make a graduate FEDANT registered. National Registration is personal to the individual. After qualifying, you must apply for admission, provide the required qualification and safety evidence, hold appropriate professional insurance (or choose to use the FEDANT Block Scheme Insurance) and meet the registration requirements in force at the time.

Your eventual National Register entry will show the exact category or categories for which FEDANT has granted admission.
